Source : Korea HeraldThree out of 10 Koreans suffer from obesity: survey
Three out of 10 Koreans suffered from obesity due to excessive food intake and a lack of exercise last year, a government study showed yesterday.
The abnormal obesity rate also steadily rose from 2.3 percent in 1998 to 3.1 percent in 2001, 3.5 percent in 2005 and 4.1 percent in 2007, according to the study released by the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs.
In the national health and nutrition research, 31.7 percent of the 4,600 people surveyed last year were considered obese. The survey, which is jointly conducted with the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 2007, aims to question up to 30,000 people by next year.
The research showed 36.2 percent of men fell under the obese category, compared to 26.3 percent for women.
A mere 45.7 percent of citizens over age 19 walked at least 30 minutes for five times a week, a sharp drop of almost 30 percent from 75.6 percent in 2001, it said.
Fat accounted for 19.5 percent of the energy sources for those over age 1, up from 6.6 percent and 13.7 percent in 1980 and 1985, respectively, according to health officials.
People who exercise regularly came in at 9.9 percent, the survey said, indicating only one out of every 10 citizens had the commitment to stay fit and healthy.
In the meantime, more than half of the respondents said they drink more than once in a monthly period.
Not only that, 47.8 percent were involved in high-risk drinking.
Sixty-two percent of men answered they drink over seven glasses of Korean soju, one of the most common liquors, at a time and nearly 29 percent of women said they consumed more than five glasses of soju during a gathering.
In a related finding, 58.9 percent suffered from hypertension and 17.7 percent had diabetes, it said.
